얼마 전, 서울 중구 정동에 위치한 덕수궁 석조전에 다녀왔어요. 석조전은 대한제국 시기에 서양식으로 지어진 건축물로, 꼭 한 번 가보고 싶었던 장소였는데요. 직접 방문해보니 왜 ‘서울 가볼만한 곳, 서울 여행지' 등으로 많이 추천되는지 알겠더라고요.
I visited Seokjojeon Hall at Deoksugung Palace, located in Jeong-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul. Seokjojeon is a Western-style building constructed during the Korean Empire period, and it had been on my Seoul bucket list for quite some time. After visiting in person, I could immediately understand why it’s often recommended as one of the best places to visit in Seoul and a must-see Seoul travel destination.
석조전 외관은 웅장한 기둥이 인상적인 신고전주의 양식으로, 영국인 건축가 존 레지널드 하딩(John Reginald Harding)이 설계했다고 해요.
전통 궁궐과는 또 다른 분위기를 느낄 수 있어서 서울 여행 코스나 서울 데이트 코스로도 인기가 많고, 아이들과 함께 역사 공부를 겸해 방문하기에도 좋은 장소입니다.
The exterior of Seokjojeon features grand columns and elegant Neo-Classical architecture. It was designed by British architect John Reginald Harding, which gives the building a distinctly European atmosphere unlike traditional Korean palaces. Because of its unique style, it’s popular not only as a Seoul travel course and Seoul date spot, but also as a great place to visit with kids for a bit of history learning as well.
덕수궁 석조전 내부 관람은 문화재청 궁능유적본부 홈페이지를 통해 사전 예약할 수 있으며, 해설사와 함께 이동하며 관람하는 방식으로 진행돼요.
입장료는 덕수궁 입장료만 지불하면 되는데요, 성인 기준 1,000원으로 부담 없는 가격이었고 석조전 내부 관람료는 별도로 없었어요. 저는 주말에 방문했는데 예약이 빠르게 마감되는 편이라, 원하는 시간대가 있다면 미리 예약하는 것을 추천드려요.
Admission to the interior of Seokjojeon Hall at Deoksugung Palace requires advance reservation through the Cultural Heritage Administration’s official website. The tour is conducted with a guide, and visitors move through the building together while listening to explanations about each room and its history.
The admission fee only includes the regular entrance ticket to Deoksugung Palace, which costs 1,000 KRW for adults, and there is no additional fee for entering Seokjojeon itself. I visited on a weekend, and reservations filled up quite quickly, so I’d definitely recommend booking in advance if you have a preferred time slot.
English-guided tours are also available, but reservations must be made on-site, and they can only be booked when accompanied by a Korean visitor.
관람동선은 중앙홀부터 시작하여 귀빈대기실로 이어졌어요. 귀빈대기실은 황제를 만나기 위해 온 해외 귀빈이나 중요한 손님들을 기다리게 하던 공간으로, 당시에 사용되었던 가구가 그대로 전시되어 있어 신기했습니다.
고풍스러운 소파와 클래식한 분위기가 인상적이었고, 대한제국의 근대적인 분위기를 느낄 수 있었어요.
The tour started at the Central Hall and continued into the Reception Waiting Room. This room was originally used for foreign guests and important visitors waiting to meet the Emperor. I found it fascinating that much of the original furniture from that era is still displayed inside the room.
The antique-style sofas and classic interior created such an elegant atmosphere, and it really reflected the modernization efforts of the Korean Empire at the time.
이어지는 접견실은 황제가 외국 사절단을 맞이하던 공간으로, 석조전의 다른 방들과 달리 황실의 문장인 이화문(오얏꽃무늬)을 가구와 인테리어에 사용한 것이 특징이라고 해요.
Next was the Audience Chamber, where the Emperor welcomed foreign diplomats and official guests. Unlike the other rooms in Seokjojeon, this room prominently features the royal plum blossom emblem(Ihwamun) of the Korean Empire in the furniture and interior details, which made it feel especially symbolic and regal.
황제침실과 황후침실은 생각보다 차분하고 단정한 느낌이었어요. 정성껏 꾸며진 공간이지만 북향 구조라 겨울에는 너무 추워서 실제로는 사용이 많이 하지 않았다고 해요. 당시 황실의 생활 모습과 시대적 분위기를 함께 상상해볼 수 있어 재밌더라고요.
The Emperor’s Bedroom and Empress’s Bedroom felt more calm and understated than I expected. Although the rooms were beautifully decorated, I learned that they were rarely used because the north-facing structure made them extremely cold during the winter months. Hearing those historical details made it easier to imagine what life in the imperial family might have been like at the time.
침실 옆으로는 서양식 화장실 공간도 함께 마련되어 있었는데, 대리석과 화이트톤으로 꾸며진 모습이 정말 예쁘죠.
Next to the bedrooms was a Western-style bathroom space, decorated with marble and white-toned interiors. It felt surprisingly modern and elegant for a building completed in the early 1900s.
황후침실은 순헌황귀비의 침실로 계획되었으나, 석조전 준공 직후 황비가 별세하여 사용하지 못했다고 하더라고요. 옷장과 세면대, 화장대, 책상 모두 준공 당시에 채워진 가구가 그대로 전시되어있었어요.
The Empress’s Bedroom was originally intended for Imperial Noble Consort Sunheon, but sadly she passed away shortly after Seokjojeon was completed, so the room was never actually used. The wardrobe, washstand, vanity, and desk displayed inside are all original furnishings from the time the palace was first completed, which made the space feel even more historically significant.
대식당은 석조전 내부에서도 가장 화려한 공간 중 하나였어요. 긴 식탁과 조명, 클래식한 인테리어가 1900년대 우리나라가 맞나 싶을 정도로 세련된 모습이었어요.
당시 황실 연회나 공식 만찬이 열리던 공간이라고 하는데, 대한제국 황실의 격식 있는 분위기를 엿볼 수 있었어요.
The Grand Dining Hall was one of the most luxurious spaces inside Seokjojeon. The long dining table, elegant lighting, and classic interior design were so refined that it was hard to believe this was Korea in the early 1900s. This room was used for royal banquets and official dinners, and it truly captured the formal atmosphere of the Korean Empire’s royal court.
석조전 대식당에는 프랑스 필리뷔트(Philibert)사가 제작한 근대식 식기도 함께 전시되어 있는데요.
화이트 컬러 식기에 금테 장식이 더해져 고급스러운 분위기가 느껴졌고, 대한제국 황실을 상징하는 오얏꽃 문양까지 담겨 있어 인상적이었어요.
Displayed inside the dining hall was a beautiful modern-style dining set made by the French company Philibert.
The white porcelain dishes with gold trim looked incredibly elegant, and I especially loved the plum blossom designs representing the Korean Empire engraved on the tableware.
2층에서 바라본 정원은 마치 유럽 궁전의 정원처럼 정돈된 분위기가 느껴졌어요. 서울 도심 한가운데라는 게 믿기지 않을 만큼, 고즈넉하고 아름다운 풍경이었습니다.
The garden view from the second floor reminded me of the neatly arranged gardens of European palaces. It was hard to believe such a peaceful and beautiful landscape existed right in the middle of Seoul.
석조전을 둘러보니, 예전에 유럽여행하며 관람했던 궁전들이 떠오르기도 했어요.
웅장한 서양식 건축과 화려한 내부 공간을 보며 대한제국이 근대 국가로 나아가고자 했던 당시의 시대상이 느껴졌고, 한편으로는 그 뒤에 이어진 우리나라의 아픈 역사까지 함께 생각하게 되는 공간이기도 했습니다.
단순히 예쁜 건축물을 넘어, 우리나라 근대사의 흐름을 직접 느껴볼 수 있었던 의미 있는 시간이었어요.

Walking through Seokjojeon also reminded me of the palaces I had visited during my travels in Europe. The grand Western-style architecture and lavish interiors reflected the Korean Empire’s desire to modernize and become part of the global world. At the same time, the space also made me reflect on the difficult history Korea experienced afterward.
More than just a beautiful building, Seokjojeon felt like a meaningful place where I could truly experience a piece of Korea’s modern history firsthand.
