오전엔 아트사이언스 뮤지엄에 갔다가, 점심을 먹고 오후에는 싱가포르 국립 박물관에 가보았어요. 기차를 좋아하는 아이에게 현지 지하철을 태워주고 싶은 마음도 있어서, 피곤했지만 열심히 돌아다녔습니다 :)
After lunch, we headed to the National Museum of Singapore. It was a pretty full day, but since my child loves trains, I really wanted him to experience Singapore’s MRT.
싱가포르 대중교통은 학생 할인이 없어서 초등학생의 경우 성인과 동일하게 요금을 지불해야하는데요. 후기를 찾아보니 트래블로그 카드는 안 되는 노선도 있다길래,, 아이가 쓸 교통 카드인 ezlink 카드를 1개 구입했어요.
저는 Bayfront MRT역에서 구입했고, 구입 시 카드 결제도 가능하더라고요. 가격은 10싱달러로, 5싱이 충전되어있고 5싱은 보증금으로 환불이 안됩니다. 카드 잔액이 3싱달러 미만이 남아있으면 탑승할 때 안 찍힌다고 해요.
One thing to note is that Singapore doesn’t offer student discounts on public transportation.
Elementary school children pay the same fare as adults. After reading some reviews and seeing that certain lines don’t accept travel cards, I decided to buy an EZ-Link card for my child. I purchased it at Bayfront MRT Station, and card payment was accepted.
The card costs 10 SGD—5 SGD comes preloaded, and the remaining 5 SGD is a non-refundable deposit. Also, if the balance drops below 3 SGD, you won’t be able to tap in, which is good to keep in mind.
저는 탭 기능이 있는 VISA 카드가 있어서, 평소 이용하던 신용카드를 찍고 들어갔어요. 넘나 편리하더라고요.
As for me, I used my contactless VISA credit card to tap in and out, which was incredibly convenient.
싱가포르 지하철은 쾌적하고, 안내도 잘 되어있고, 노선이 복잡하지 않아 이용하는데 어려움이 없었어요.
Overall, Singapore’s MRT system is clean, well-organized, and easy to navigate, even for first-time visitors.
지하철 안내 방송은 3개 국어(영어, 중국어, 말레이시아어)로 나오고, 지하철 자체가 무인 열차라 맨 앞이나 맨 뒤 칸에 타면 터널을 바라보며 이동할 수 있는 점도 색다른 경험이었어요.
Train announcements are made in three languages—English, Chinese, and Malay, and since the MRT is fully automated, riding in the front or back car lets you look straight into the tunnel. It felt like a fun little experience, especially for kids.
박물관은 Bencoolen역에서 하차하여 걸어갔어요. 입장권은 역시 클룩에서 구매했고, 내부 사진은 따로 찍지 않았습니다. 싱가포르의 역사에 대해 잘 정리된 곳이라 꽤 유익했어요.
We got off at Bencoolen Station and walked to the museum.
I bought the admission tickets through Klook, and I didn’t take photos inside. The exhibitions were well-curated and gave a clear overview of Singapore’s history, making the visit both educational and engaging.

2층으로 올라가면 역시 미디어아트를 활용한 싱가포르의 역사도 관람할 수 있어요. 요즘 박물관이나 미술관에서 미디어 아트를 접목한 전시가 늘어나는 추세인데, 싱가포르 국립박물관도 이런 흐름을 잘 반영하고 있더라고요.
On the second floor, there’s a section that uses media art to tell Singapore’s story.
These days, many museums are incorporating interactive digital elements, and the National Museum of Singapore does this especially well. Exhibits respond as you walk past or touch certain areas, which made the experience much more immersive.
동선은 2층을 먼저 관람하는 게 효과적인데, 저는 몰라서 반대로 봤습니다… 아이에게 1층 전시가 지루하게 느껴질 수도 있어서, 반대로 봐도 상관은 없는 것 같아요.
Ideally, it’s better to start from the second floor and work your way down—but I didn’t know that and ended up doing the opposite. That said, for kids who might find the traditional first-floor exhibits a bit slow, reversing the order isn’t a bad idea at all.
입장하면서 RFID 팔찌 하나를 고를 수 있는데, 이 팔찌가 전시 체험의 핵심 역할을 해요. 팔찌를 활용해서, 반려 수호신 동물을 한마리씩 데리고 다니며 관람할 수 있는데요. 팔찌를 인식시키거나 특정 공간에 가까이 가면 화면 속 캐릭터가 움직이거나 반응하면서 전시 스토리에 자연스럽게 참여하게 돼요.
At the entrance, visitors can pick up an RFID wristband, which plays a key role in the exhibition experience.
Through the wristband, you’re paired with a small guardian animal, almost like a companion, as you move through the museum. When you tap the wristband or approach certain zones, the character reacts on screen, making you feel like you’re actively part of the story rather than just observing it.
마지막에는 동물을 풀어주고 킹크랩이 깨어나면서 전시가 끝나요.
At the end of the exhibition, you release your animal, and a giant king crab awakens, signaling the conclusion of the experience.
특히 재미있었던 건 바닥이나 벽을 지나가거나 손으로 터치하면 즉각 반응하는 미디어 아트 공간이었어요.
발걸음에 따라 빛이 퍼지거나, 화면 속 그래픽이 움직이면서 전시가 살아 움직이는 느낌이라 아이도 흥미롭게 관람했어요.
One of the most memorable parts was the interactive media art, where floors and walls respond instantly to movement and touch. Light spreads with each step, and graphics shift as you interact, making the exhibition feel alive. My child was especially engaged in these areas.
전체적으로 싱가포르 국립박물관은 전통적인 역사 전시와 미디어 아트가 조화롭게 어우러진 공간이었어요.
더운 날이나 비 오는 날에도 부담 없이 들르기 좋은 실내 명소라, 아이와 함께하는 싱가포르 여행 일정에 한 번쯤 꼭 넣어볼 만한 장소라는 생각이 들었습니다 :)
Overall, the National Museum of Singapore strikes a great balance between traditional history and modern media art.
It’s an excellent indoor destination for hot or rainy days, and a place I’d highly recommend adding to your itinerary if you’re traveling to Singapore with kids.
