날씨가 좋았던 주말, 홍제천을 산책하며 홍제 유연까지 걸어보았습니다. 홍제 유연은 서울 홍제동의 유진상가 지하에 있는 약 520m 길이의 산책로예요. 예전엔 어떤 모습이었는지 모르겠지만, 지금은 예술공간으로 조성되어 많은 분들이 찾는 서대문구의 명소 중 하나입니다.

On a beautiful autumn day, I strolled along the Hongje stream, all the way to Hongje Yuyeon. Hongje Yuyeon is a 520-meter-long underground path situated in the Yujin Shopping Center in Hongje-dong, Seoul. I can't say what it used to look like in the past, but now it has been transformed into an art space and stands as one of the popular attractions in Seodaemun-gu.
유진상가는 50여 년 전 타워팰리스 같은, 우리나라 최초의 주상복합 건물이었어요. 외관이 많이 낡았지만, 군사적인 목적으로 지어진 건물이기도 해서 굉장히 튼튼하다고 합니다... 빨리 개발이 돼서, 서북권 랜드마크로 거듭나길 바라고 있는 중이에요.
Yujin Shopping Center stands as South Korea's first commercial-residential building, akin to the Tower Palace, with a history spanning over 50 years. Its exterior may show signs of aging, but it was initially designed with military purposes in mind, making it exceptionally robust. I have hopes that it will undergo development soon and become a new landmark in the northwestern Seoul area.
홍제 유연을 유진상가 방향에서 진입하면 이런 느낌이에요. 해가 질 녘이라, 조명도 하늘도 더 예뻐 보이네요.
Entering Hongje Yuyeon from the Yujin Shopping Center direction offers this view. With the sun setting, the lighting and the sky become even more enchanting.
반대편에는 낙하 분수가 있어요. 사진 찍으려니 안타깝게 끝나버렸지만... 운영시간을 살펴보니 3월 중순부터 10월까지, 하루 3회, 10분씩 운영하더라고요. 11월이 된 지금은 끝났겠네요;
반포대교처럼, 저녁에 음악/조명과 함께 분수가 나와도 예쁘겠다는 생각이 들었어요.
On the opposite side, there is a fountain. Unfortunately, it ended just as I was about to take a picture. The operating hours run from mid-March to October, three times a day. Now that it's November, it must have concluded... I couldn't help but think about how lovely it would be to have the fountain accompanied by music and lights in the evening, similar to the Banpo Bridge.
이제 홍제 유연 안으로 들어가 보겠습니다. 홍제천 중간에는 이렇게 징검다리가 있어서, 조명을 감상할 수 있어요. 공간이 감각적이다 보니, 이곳에서 영상 촬영을 하는 모습도 종종 볼 수 있어요.
If you go inside Hongje Yuyeon, you'll find a stepping stone bridge like this, offering a delightful view of the lighting. It's a popular spot for people to shoot videos as well.
중간중간 작품들이 있어서, 노후된 공간을 빛내주고 있어요. 이 작품은 '온기'입니다 :)
There are artworks placed throughout, brightens up the space. This particular piece is called '온기' which translates to 'Warmth.'
홍제는 '널리 구제하다'라는 뜻을 가지고 있다고 해요. 홍제천은 과거에는 겨울에도 따뜻했던 하천으로 유명하여 사람들이 모이는 인기 있는 빨래터(?!)로, 만남과 교류의 장소였다고 합니다. 손바닥 모양 패널에 손을 대고 있으면 따뜻한 빛으로 공간이 변하는데, 홍제천이 상징하던 온화한 정서를 표현하기 위한 작품이라고 하네요.
The term '홍제' is said to mean "to widely share" or "to help many." In the past, it is said that Hongje stream was a well-known, popular laundry area that stayed warm even in winter. It was a gathering place for people, a hub for social interaction. If you place your hand on the palm-shaped panel, the space transforms into warm color lights. This artwork is meant to symbolize the warm emotions associated with Hongje stream.
이 곳에는 자연의 그림을 담은 원형의 조명이 어두운 산책로에 하나씩 띄워져 있어요.
In this place, circular lights featuring natural scenes are placed one by one along the dark walking path.
걷다 보면 눈에 띄는 한자 2개가 있어요. 소리 음(音)과 밝을 명(明)이 거꾸로 세워져 있어서, 물에 비치도록 되어있습니다. 두 글자는 조화를 상징하는 글자로, 공간에 담긴 빛과 소리를 재정의 한다는 약간의 어려운 의미를 담고 있어요.
There are also two noticeable Chinese characters. The characters "Sound" (音) and "Light" (明) are arranged upside down to be reflected in the water. These two characters symbolize harmony and carry a somewhat intricate meaning, redefining the light and sound within the space.
서대문구청 방향으로 보는 홍제 유연의 모습도 찍어보았습니다. 홍제 유연의 뜻은, '물과 사람의 인연이 흘러 예술로 치유하고 화합한다'는 의미를 가지고 있는데요, 낡고 오래된 건물의 지하 공간을 문화 예술 공간으로 재탄생시켜서, 다시 사람이 모이는 공간으로 만든 건 너무나 좋은 취지의 사업이라고 생각돼요.
I also took a photo of Hongje Yuyeon from the direction of Seodaemun-gu Office. The meaning of Hongje Yuyeon is to "heal and harmonize through the flow of water with art." It's wonderful to think that they have repurposed the underground space of an old building into a cultural and artistic space, creating a place where people gather once again.
가까운 곳에 홍제천 산책로와 홍제 유연 같은 문화공간이 있는 건 삶의 질을 높여주는데 정말 도움이 되는 데요, 홍제동이 재정비되고, 앞으로도 동네가 더 활력이 생겼으면 좋겠습니다 :)
Having cultural spaces like the Hongje stream walking path and Hongje Yuyeon nearby contributes to enhancing our quality of life. With the redevelopment of Hongje-dong, I look forward to the neighborhood gaining even more vitality in the future.
