지난주, 아이가 혹독한 열감기에 걸려서 열흘간 가정보육을 했었어요. 일주일간 새벽에 잠도 설치고 몸도 마음도 많이 지쳐있었는데, 아드님이 오랜만에 유치원 가게 된 날 저도 머리를 식히러 나갔습니다...
종로 국제 갤러리에서 아니쉬 카푸어전을 하고 있더라고요. 작년 베니스 비엔날레를 통해 아니쉬 카푸어를 알게 되었는데, 이 작가님의 작품을 무료로 볼 수 있다니. 안 갈 이유가 없었어요 :)
Last week, my child got a severe fever and I had to take care of him for more than a week. I didn't get much sleep, so I was exhausted when he got better. So on the day my child finally went back to kindergarten, I also went out to refresh myself.
I went to Jongno Kukje Gallery, to watch the Anish Kapoor exhibition. I first learned about Anish Kapoor through last year's Venice Biennale, and I was exciting to see his work.

이 날 날씨가 참 맑고 화창했어요. 날씨가 시원해질거라 예상하고, 에어컨을 사지 않고 있는데 여전히 덥네요... (TMI: 현재 집 에어컨은 사망 상태...😥)
The weather was really clear and sunny that day. I expected it to get cooler, so I didn't buy an air conditioner, but it's still so hot... (TMI: My air conditioner at home is totally dead...)
갤러리 입구에는 작가님와 전시에 대한 소개글이 있는 안내지가 있어요. 한장 씩 챙겨서 입장했습니다.
At the entrance of the gallery, there were brochures with information about the artist and the exhibition. I took one and entered.
아니쉬 카푸어는 인도 출신이지만, 영국에서 예술 공부를 하고 현재는 런던과 베니스에 거주 및 활동하고 있어요. 예전에 인터뷰 영상을 본 적이 있는데 목소리가 아주 멋지더라고요. 영국의 권위있는 예술상인 터너 프라이즈를 받았고, 그의 작품들은 유수의 미술관에 소장되고 전세계 랜드마크로 자리잡을만큼 국제적인 명성이 높은 작가입니다.
Anish Kapoor was born in Mumbai, and studied art in the UK and currently lives and works in London and Venice. I remember watching an interview of him once, and his voice was very impressive. He won the prestigious Turner Prize in 1991, and his works are permanently exhibited in major art museums. Many of his public artworks have become iconic landmarks around the world.
- K1 전시관
K1 전시관에는 회화 작품과 검정 작품들을 만나볼 수 있었어요.
At the K1 exhibition hall, there were both paintings and his signature black works.
요동치는 감정을 나타내는 듯한 그림들. 이 작품은 물 속에서 번지는 잉크 같기도 합니다.
The paintings seem to express fluctuating emotions. This one resembles ink spreading in water.
화르르 화르르 제 마음 속 같았어요...
It looks just like my angry feelings...
자신이 놓인 환경과 대면하는 신체의 불안정성을 너무 잘 표현한 것 같아요. 현대인이라면 누구나 느끼는 감정이 아닐까요.
Kapoor seems to capture the chaos and what lies beyond the door so well.
K2 전시실 관람 후 마지막으로 다시 한번 K1을 둘러보았는데, 요 작품이 눈에 들어오더라고요. 제 눈에는 양 주먹을 불끈 쥐며 화를 참고 있는 듯한 느낌이에요.
After viewing the K2 exhibition hall, I went back to K1 one last time, and this particular piece caught my eye. To me, it looks like an emotion clenching both fists tightly and restraining anger.
K1 안쪽 공간에는 인스타로 처음 접했던, 카푸어의 대표적인 검정 작품도 실제로 볼 수 있었어요. 회화나 조각 작품들에 비해, 이 공간은 정말 극도로 차분합니다.
After watching the paintings, I went to see Kapoor's iconic black artwork. Compared to the paintings or sculptures, this space was extremely calm.
앞에서 봤을 때와 옆에서 봤을 때 다른 형태를 가진 오브제인데요, 보고 있으면 기분이 참 묘해요.
The black work is an object that takes on different forms when viewed from the front, and from the side. It creates a rather intriguing feeling when you look at it.
영상으로도 남겨보았어요. 앞에서 보면 그저 평면적인 모습인데, 너무 신기하더라고요.
I also attempted to capture it on video. When viewed from the front, it seems completely flat... It was genuinely fascinating to witness this.
K2, K3 는 별도 건물이라 나가서 이동해야합니다. 저는 조각 작품들이 있는 K3로 먼저 가보았어요.
K2 and K3 are separate buildings, so you have to exit the main building. I decided to visit K3 first, where the sculpture works are displayed.
- K3 전시관
K3 전시관에는 거대한 조각 작품이 4점 전시 되어있어요.
In the K3 exhibition hall, there are four large sculptures.
안에 뿔이 들어있길래, 뭘 표현한걸까 궁금했는데 작품 제목이 Moon Shadow더라고요. 운석 같은 느낌도 드네요.
Inside this sculpture, there were horns incorporated. The title of the artwork is "Moon Shadow." It also gives off a feeling reminiscent of meteorites.
이 조각품은 강렬한 빨간색인데, 심장처럼 보이기도 합니다.
This sculpture is a striking shade of red and resembles a human heart.
거즈 소재 사이사이 튀어나온 실리콘도 의도적인 거겠죠. 뭔가 안에서 꿈틀거리는 느낌도 나요.
The silicone protruding between the gauze material also seems intentional. It gives the impression of something wriggling from within.
- K2 전시관
K2 전시 공간에는 다소 기이하고, 충격적인 작품들이 많았어요. 비위가 약한 분들은 보기 어려울 수도 있을 것 같아요. 작가님 내면의 감정이 폭발한 시점에 제작된 게 아닐까 싶은....
The K2 exhibition space had quite a few bizarre and shocking artworks. It might be difficult for some people to view them. I wonder if these works were created at a point when the artist's emotions were exploding...
유화, 실리콘, 섬유유리로 제작되어, 작품들이 마치 살아 숨쉬는 듯한 느낌이 들었어요. 이 혓바닥도 마치 벽에서 튀어나와 움직이는 것 같죠.
Made of oil paint, silicone, and fiberglass, the artworks gave off a feeling as if they were alive and breathing. Even this tongue object appeared as if it were coming out of the wall and moving.
이 작품은 약간 섬뜩했어요. 생명체가 이 안에 들어있는 듯한 느낌;
This artwork was somewhat eerie. It gave the sensation that there might be a living (or maybe dead..) organism inside it.
배경의 컬러감 때문에 전체적으로 보면 몽환적이지만 가까이서 보면 역시 좀 무섭습니다.
I loved the color palette of the background of these paintings, giving a dreamlike view. But if you look closely, it can still be quite unsettling.
이 작품은 보자마자 심장이 생각났어요. (터질 것 같은 내 심장...날 미치게 만들 것 같았지만...😎)
This artwork reminded me of a human heart aswell.
요즘 기분이 좀 가라앉아 있었는데, 카푸어의 작품들을 보고 신선한 충격을 받았습니다. 현존과 부재를 동시에 구현한다는 어려운 설명이 적혀있지만, 작품을 마주했을 때 어려운 느낌은 들지 않았어요.
아무튼, 오랜만에 혼자 바람쐬며 아니쉬 카푸어의 작품들을 볼 수 있어서 좋았어요. 앞으로 국제 갤러리에서 진행되는 전시는 종종 보러가야겠습니다 :)
Lately, I have been feeling a bit down, but Kapoor's artworks gave me a refreshing inspiration. Although there was a difficult description about realizing existence and absence simultaneously, I didn't feel challenging when I faced the artworks.
Anyway, it was great to have some time by myself, enjoy the sunny weather, and see Anish Kapoor's works. I was so satisfied that day, I'm planning to visit exhibitions at kukje gallery more often in the future :)
