집에 도착해서 짐을 정리하는데, 캐리어 앞면이 깨져있더라고요. 공항에서 급히 나오느라 미처 확인하지 못한 부분… 캐리어 파손을 한 번 경험했기에 앱을 통해 바로 신고했지만, 지난 여행에 이어 캐리어가 연달아 깨져서 조금 당황스럽긴 했어요.
When I got home and started unpacking, I noticed that the front of my suitcase was damaged. I hadn’t checked it at the airport since I was in a hurry to leave. Having experienced luggage damage before, I immediately filed a report through the app, but I was a bit shocked that my suitcase got broken again, just like in my previous trip.
캐리어는 앞면과 파손된 부분, 그리고 수하물 택까지 촬영했어요. 파손 부위는 얼핏 보면 안 보여서 공항에서 확인하기엔 힘들었을 위치더라고요...
I took photos of the front of the suitcase, the damaged area, and the baggage tag. The damage wasn’t immediately visible at a glance, so it would have been difficult to notice at the airport.
하단에 쭉 깨진 자국 보이시죠. 충격이 어찌 가해지면 이렇게 깨지는건지 ㅜㅜ
You can see the long crack at the bottom... I can’t imagine what kind of impact could have caused it to break like this…
이 캐리어도 산지 5년이 넘은거라, 수명이 다했나 싶었어요. 깨진 캐리어로 한국으로 돌아갈 수는 없으니, 미국에서 보상받기 위해 LAX 공항으로 접수를 했습니다.
This suitcase is over five years old, so I wondered if it had simply reached the end of its lifespan. But since I couldn’t travel back to Korea with a broken suitcase, I filed a claim at LAX to request compensation.
한 번 해본거라 신고 자체는 어렵지 않았어요. 탑승일, 항공권 번호, 수하물택 번호를 입력하고, 파손 부분 잘 보이는 사진도 첨부하였습니다.
Since I had gone through this process before, filing the claim wasn’t difficult. I entered the travel date, ticket number, and baggage tag number, and I also attached clear photos of the damaged area.
3일 정도 지나니 메일로 회신이 왔어요. 새 캐리어를 배송받을 수 있을 거라 생각했는데, 미국은 배송비가 비싸서 그런지 한국과는 진행절차가 다르더라고요. 파손된 캐리어를 가지고 공항에 직접 방문해야했고, 현금 보상을 원할 경우에는 영수증이 있어야했어요.
About three days later, I received a reply via email. I had expected them to send me a new suitcase, but the process was different from Korea, likely due to high shipping costs in the U.S. I had to bring the damaged suitcase to the airport in person, and if I wanted cash compensation, I needed to provide a receipt.
인천공항으로 처리 지점을 옮길 수 있는지 문의했지만 안되는지, 여행중간에 방문이 어려우면 출국날 체크인 시 새 캐리어를 주겠다는 답변만 받았습니다.
I asked if I could transfer the claim to Incheon Airport, but they said it wasn’t possible. Instead, they told me that if I couldn’t visit during my trip, they would provide a new suitcase when I checked in for my departure.
출국날 체크인 하며 가방에서 짐을 옮기는 것도 정신없을 것 같아서, 폭우가 오던 날 비를 뚫고 LAX공항에 갔어요. 공항이 집에서 가까운 편이 아닌지라, 애들 학교 라이딩에 거의 4시간 운전한 언니에게 너무 미안하고 고마웠던 날.
I knew that transferring my belongings during check-in on departure day would be too chaotic, so I made the trip to LAX in advance, braving the pouring rain. Since the airport wasn’t close to home, I felt both guilty and deeply grateful to my sister, who had already spent nearly four hours driving for school drop-offs that day.
메일로 방문 날짜와 시간은 미리 커뮤니케이션하고, LAX 공항 출국장 대한항공 체크인 카운터 B33 앞으로 갔어요. 직원분께 신분증을 보여드리고(모바일 신분증 가능) 서류에 서명하니, 파손된 가방 수거 후 새 가방을 주셨습니다.
I communicated the date and time of my visit in advance via email and went to the Korean Air check-in counter B33. After showing my ID (mobile ID was also accepted) and signing the documents, the staff took the damaged suitcase and gave me a new one.
가방은 크기와 스펙이 동일한 캐리어였어요.
새 가방을 받아서 좋긴했지만, 앞으로 여행 다닐 때, 특히 해외에서는 공항 도착 후 가방 체크를 꼭 해야겠다는 생각이 또 들었어요. 당분간은 파손 없이 여행 다닐 수 있기를...🙏
The new suitcase was the same size and specifications as the damaged one. While I was glad to receive a replacement, it reminded me that I should always check my luggage as soon as I arrive at the airport, especially when traveling abroad. I’m hoping my travels will be free of damage from now on.
